LARRY D. CROMWELL was born in 1939 in Dodge City, Kansas where he spent his boyhood years. He received a good deal of his early education on the banks of Buckner Creek building his skills of observation and catching fish. His rural roots and rich boyhood experiences combine with his love of the outdoors, providing both direction and inspiration for his art.

Formal education includes a Bachelor degree in Fine Art from Fort Hays Kansas State College, Hays Kansas, 1961 and a Masters degree in Fine Art from the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, Colorado in 1962. In 1971 Larry completed his Ph.D. degree in Art Education at the University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon.

In 1962 Larry began his teaching career as a junior high school art teacher in Boise, Idaho and later taught art at Boise State College. Upon completion of his Ph.D.. degree he accepted a teaching position at The University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 1971, where he taught until his retirement. He taught mainly in the areas of drawing and art education, attaining the rank of Professor. During his tenure at the U of C he served as Head, Department of Art from 1979 until 1982. He retired with the title ‘Professor Emeritus’ at the end of 1999 after nearly 30 years of teaching at the U of C. He continues his teaching through an active schedule of watercolour and drawing workshops, sharing his enthusiasm and experience with others. Shortly after retirement, Larry was elected to serve as Provincial President for the Alberta Society of Artists for a two year term. He continues to be an active member of the ASA. As an artist, Larry feels his responsibilities go beyond his studio as an advocate for the arts and as a contributor to the fabric of our society.

As a watercolour painter his style is deeply rooted in the traditional use of transparencies, washes, a strong sense of value, and an uninhibited use of colour which combine to identify his work. Landscape is his preferred subject for watercolour, while his drawings celebrate his more personal visions, often using the element of humor to express his thoughts. Whether painting or drawing, his work expresses the subject not as an object but rather as an observable or remembered event. The ambiguity of time and circumstance, weather, reflection, light and shadow, and their ability to change provide this artist with inspiration and challenge.

A record of exhibitions include numerous solo exhibitions, juried shows and published wildlife illustrations at both national and international levels. The artist’s work can be found in both private and corporate collections in Canada and the USA. A memorable highlight for the artist was the opportunity to sail aboard the Society Explorer as Artist in Residence and Fly Fishing Guide. This unique expedition cruise included visits to remote islands, coastlines, bays and rivers between Nome, Alaska and Prince Rupert, BC.
